The Holy Spirit’s Mission

But very truly I tell you, it is for your good that I am going away. Unless I go away, the Advocate will not come to you; but if I go, I will send him to you. John 16:7

The image was of water — a familiar one.  To a first-century Jewish believer, baptism meant the same thing it does today. A complete and total covering of water physically represented a spiritual oneness with whatever message called for the baptism.  John’s message was repentance.  So getting baptized by John meant you intended to change your ways.

The Holy Spirit’s mission depends completely on each of God’s newborn children exercising the faith that God provides them. You were physically born and now you are spiritually born. When you are saved, you are baptized with the Holy Spirit. It is interesting to ponder that there is nothing that we as Christians can do to save ourselves or be an influence for good to those around us without the Holy Spirit at work within us. It again brings to mind the well coined phrase, “It’s not all about you.” When we change our name from human being to human doing our thought process becomes motivated by “have to” rather than “want to”. The damaging thought of guilt versus acceptance takes over and the joy that has been provided by the Holy Spirit is squelched.  Remember God accepts and Satan condemns. God doesn’t demand, He provides. He has given us everything. It is Satan who robs us of what God has given us. Are we under God’s pressure or has he provided us faith to take that pressure from us? What is the object of our faith? I hope its God’s total acceptance through His sacrifice.

Thank you Father for the faith and joy you have provided through your sacrifice and your presence of your Holy Spirit within me.
