The Mole Within

A person without self-control is like a city with broken-down walls.  Proverbs 25:28

In early 2001, the F.B.I. arrested the most infamous double agent in U.S. intelligence history.  For years Robert Hassen, a mole inside the FBI, had been spying for the former Soviet Union in exchange for cash and diamonds.

The feds observed Hassen making a drop of classified information to his Russian handlers in exchange for fifty thousand dollars. Fellow agents described Hassen as a very religious person and expressed shock that he would betray his country—they said he was the last person they would expect to do something so treacherous. When the dust settled they discovered that many agents behind the Iron Curtain lost their lives because of this one American’s betrayal. Hassen’s greatest strength was an intimate knowledge of the inner workings of the FBI.

Inconspicuous, elusive, knowledgeable, precise, timely, deadly—all these words describe a mole. He understands his enemy’s strengths, weaknesses, vulnerabilities, key relationships, hot buttons, temptations, and character. Another man expressed his situation this way: “I don’t really understand myself, for I want to do what is right, but I don’t do it. Instead, I do what I hate” (Romans 7:15, NLT). Paul knew the mole inside him and us and he named it our “sin nature.” Those words were written more than 2000 years ago.

The first step to exposing and defeating the mole is to know you have one and to know its goal.  Jesus identified it for us when He warned, “The spirit is willing but the flesh is weak” (Matthew 26:40). Something that has helped me with mole deception is becoming a little angry at being taken of advantage of when the mole is successful I then strike back by eliminating the things he feeds on. We all know deep down what they are—the triggers and traps that snare us in sin.

Father, thank you for the intel you have provided in your Word that arms me against the enemy’s traps.
