“What you heard from me, keep as the pattern of sound teaching, with faith and love in Christ Jesus. 2 Timothy 1:13
Jesus knew that the measure of His mission would be His ability to reproduce Himself. Otherwise the mission would not get done. Jesus did a lot of public healings, preached to the masses, and fed thousands, but His goal was to train a few guys who would go out and multiply the message and ministry way beyond His time on earth.
When it came to being a disciple, the apostle Paul looked at the men he touched much like banks that have been entrusted with the valuable commodities of his spiritual investments. While held in prison in Rome by the emperor Nero, Paul made sure one of his best trainees remembered how precious the investment of his life was to him. The trainee, Timothy, was a spiritual repository of Paul’s best thinking, modeling, and ministry. These needed to be guarded and preserved by Timothy, as well as multiplied like an investment into the lives of others.
First he had to value what Paul taught him. As God’s man, Timothy needed to “keep the pattern” he had learned from another God’s man in terms of the message he was to share with others. Timothy needed to guard the deposit Paul made in his life rather than squander or waste it. Timothy needed to do one more thing. He needed to invest this value into others. As God’s man how well am I doing with the most valuable thing I have? I have my I.D. card that gives me God’s grace, forgiveness, total acceptance, unconditional love, security, self esteem, confidence, peace, purpose, meaning and in the future it’s topped off with eternal life with the God who gave me all this. Wow!
Father, help me find a way to teach others what has been taught to me.
