Humility

Let’s take a look at what the title above really looks like from a truth perspective. The Word has provided us this classic passage: Think of yourselves the way Christ Jesus thought of himself.  He had equal status with God but didn’t think so much of himself that he had to cling to the advantages of that status no matter what. Not at all.  When the time came, he set aside the privileges of deity and took on the status of a slave, became human!  Having become human, he stayed human.  It was an incredibly humbling process.  He didn’t claim special privileges.  Instead, he lived a selfless, obedient life and then died a selfless obedient death — and the worst kind of death at that — a crucifixion.  Because of that obedience, God lifted him high and honored him far beyond anyone or anything, ever, so that all created beings in heaven and on earth — even those long ago dead and buried — will bow in worship before this Jesus Christ, and call out in praise that he is the Master of all, to the glorious honor of God the Father (Philippians 2:5-11, MSG)

The axis of humility is internal.  It is an emotional posture that makes the people in your presence feel unburdened, light, and connected to you all at the same time.  Your presentation is unforced but strong.  This is because, at its roots, true Christ-based humility in a man combines a modest opinion of one’s own importance with an excessively high estimation of the importance of God and people. The possessor of humility disappears as an emotional obstacle to the other person and leaves two powerful forces in their place: God’s presence and the other person’s importance.

Think Jesus and the prostitute. Feel the interaction between Jesus and the woman at the well.  Revisit Jesus and the lepers.  Reread about Jesus and the man born blind.  What did they all experience? They stood in God’s presence and felt safe and connected to God.  Humbling isn’t it?

Father, there is a very humbling saying, “It’s not all about me”
