I Don’t Care

Do not throw away your confidence; it will be richly rewarded. You need to persevere so that when you have done the will of God, you will receive what he has promised. Hebrews 10:35-36

“I don’t care,” is a ratified declaration of our God’s man constitution. We should have the same dogged cynicism, the same disdain, and the same offended sensibility when insecure voices within beg us to be a man pleaser over a God pleaser. There are some things we simply cannot afford to care about in light of our identity, our purpose, and our connection to Jesus Christ. We must stop wearing the masks that get us “liked” by men at the expense of grieving the Holy Spirit.

Like U.S. Marshal Samuel Gerard in the famous story “The Fugitive” (either the iconic 60s TV show or the movie featuring Tommy Lee Jones as Gerard), God’s man is so caught up in his pursuit of God and putting the “fugitive” (the old you) where he belongs, second thoughts about currying compromise to win approval of men seem absurd. Rejection for the sake of Christ might bring a cynical laugh or two from those who don’t know Him, but it also brings serious consequences. Whatever the fallout might be, you will take the hits. If nothing else it will be an aid to your insecurity and an attack on your identity. Don’t compromise for men; don’t apologize and don’t shrink back.

The pattern of the Early Church is still the pattern we are to follow today. God’s man risks being faithful to who he is because being something else is a lie and misses the mark of God’s high call—the call to choose Him and be faithful to Him.

Father, Your Word says, “perfect love cast out fear” (1 John 4:18). Thank You for Your promise and thank You for the confidence that only You can supply.
