Praying for Open Doors

Tell of His glory among the nations, His wonderful deeds among all the peoples. Psalm 96:3

I was on Facebook recently and someone posed the question, “How many people have you led to Christ?” It’s an interesting question, and evangelist Billy Graham liked to answer it by saying that scores of people planted and watered along the way, and he was just fortunate to be there to see the harvest. Thankfully, God doesn’t expect us to be Billy Graham. But he does want us to tell others about him and his son. He created you to talk about him—it’s one of the main reasons we are on the planet.

I want to challenge you—and myself—today to take God at his word. God’s man is proactive on the gospel front. He’s an infantryman hungry for some action, praying for assignments. “Evangelism” is kind of a big, intimidating word. Telling others about Jesus starts with taking one step, then another. For example, if you are in a men’s group, your group might consider evangelism as spart of your group culture and covenant. If you have an accountability partner, you could load in an accountability question for evangelism alongside the sexual temptation question. Few men I work with are naturally aggressive in sharing their faith. Most of us need to train up and into spiritual confidence first. We have to own it.

The key to developing God’s purpose for evangelism starts here: We are convinced that this is His priority for our lives. God commands that we go and make disciples (see Matthew 28:18-20). Next, we pray for opportunities and be mindful that God will layer us into situations—some obvious and some not so obvious—that call us to share our testimony and the gospel on His time. Last, we are to proactively pursue, encourage, and sharpen each other in sharing our faith.

As we risk building a lifestyle of sharing Christ through prayer and then practice, we will begin to see the custom-built opportunities God has already laid out. Prayer will be the key at each step of the process.

Father, thank you for what you have done in my life and now help me share it with others.
