Resist

Resist the devil, and he will flee from you.  James 4:7

Before meeting with the guys, he awakened early and in the quiet of the morning, sat in his favorite chair to open his Bible. His reading for the day was about being a good soldier for Christ Jesus. One verse, in particular, jumped off the page: “If you keep yourself pure, you will be a utensil God can use for his purpose. Your life will be clean, and you will be ready for the Master to use you for every good work” (2 Timothy 2:21, NIT).

With each sentence in the verse, Brett could feel the tears coming—God’s Spirit was speaking directly to him. He reread the verse four or five times and spontaneously started talking to God about his problem with porn and his desire to be clean and useful for God.

Just the day before, Brett was online, at work, visiting sexually explicit websites when his secretary surprised him. Thank goodness she knocked before coming in, and he was able to close the window in time. That event combined with the reading from 2 Timothy sealed his decision to make a turnaround. Starting today, Brett announced to our group, it was time to retake this foothold he had given to the devil.

Whenever we decide to candidly reveal the whole truth about sexual sin, Satan unleashes a mortar barrage of fear because he desperately wants our private sin to remain unknown to others. The last thing he wants is for our sexual transgressions to come out of the darkness and be exposed to the light. Exposing the enemy’s foothold in this area––or any of the others I have described—is the equivalent of a spiritual D-Day invasion to defeat Satan’s strongholds. Satan will pull out all the stops to prevent you from even hitting the beaches and to you it will feel like all hell has broken loose.

But don’t give up—the fight for sexual purity is more than worth it. Arguably, there is no area of a man’s life that requires accountability more than the battle for sexual freedom. You cannot win this fight alone, just as France or Britain could not have taken back Europe from Hitler on their own. Declare war; wage the battle. Do not stop until purity is your norm, rather than your exception.

Father, I can’t break sexual habits by myself. Guide me to the men and resources I need to hold me accountable.
