Be on Your Guard

No temptation has overtaken you except such as is common to man; but God is faithful, who will not allow you to be tempted beyond what you are able, but with the temptation will also make the way of escape, that you may be able to bear it.  1 Corinthians 10:13 (NKJV)

The mole’s very existence hinges on one thing––concealment. His whole mission is compromised when his greatest strength is exposed––his cover. From my experience, beating my mole happens when I acknowledge his existence continually, pursue him diligently, expose him constantly, and manage him aggressively. I still feel the dark urge to sin, lash out, or otherwise give up control to my sin nature, but at least my mind is more cognizant of what is happening and my commitment to being God’s man brings me more frequent victories.

We must train for those exact moments when the mole offers the lure. Specifically, we must work with something I call God’s calling plan—calling out the mole when and where we see it. The point is that when we’re tempted to indulge an appetite, we have to recall that it is nothing more than deception. Many men are simply careless this way, so they hang around, making second or third passes around the lure (flirting with the cute woman at the office, visiting the social media site that trips them up, cuing up the streaming show they know isn’t the best thing to watch). The longer the mole goes unchallenged, the more power it gains over our lives and actions. This is fatal—you don’t want to linger too long when the mole dangles his lure.

I’ve found that the only way for me to deal effectively with the mole’s lures is to come out swinging. I have to come out in boxer mode and pepper my opponent with several jabs to keep him off balance. I do this by calling him what he is (a thief and a liar), and calling out Scripture audibly. If it helps, place Scripture at the edge of your computer screen or write out some verses and place them around the house. (It’s old school, but it works!) Say them out loud when temptations hit.

For men the major mole is very aggressive, especially with the lures of sex, security, and entitlement. Much of our aggressive responses, for example, are because someone is taking what we think is ours. When that aggression or lust wells up, punch it in the mouth and lay it at the feet of Jesus.

Father, thank you for “mole awareness.” Help me seek Your way of escape in every temptation I face today.
