September 30, 2013 | Featured | “MEATING” WITH THE GUYS – Jesus grilled for his guys, went deep, and so should you

What’s that smell?

No! Not that one, the other kind—the food kind.  A man could be mowing his lawn, washing his car, or walking the dog and, like a sheepdog “nosing” the wind for a wolf, he will stop and sniff the air.  He will detect the odor of animal flesh mixing with flame carried by the winds.  What follows is a true gut reaction.

  • “Somethin’ smells good.”
  • “I am feeling hungry.”
  • “What’s that?”
  • “What’s for dinner?”
  • “Honey, I feel like ribs.”

Kenny Luck, Every Man MinistriesGuys.  Grilled flesh.  Gut reactions.  Great strategy for evangelism?

FACT:  Jesus grilled for his guys prior to going deep with his guys.  Observe.

Simon Peter said, “I’m going fishing.”

“We’ll come, too,” they all said. So they went out in the boat, but they caught nothing all night.  At dawn Jesus was standing on the beach, but the disciples couldn’t see who he was.  He called out, “Fellows, have you caught any fish?  “No,” they replied. Then he said, “Throw out your net on the right-hand side of the boat, and you’ll get some!” So they did, and they couldn’t haul in the net because there were so many fish in it.   Then the disciple Jesus loved said to Peter, “It’s the Lord!” When Simon Peter heard that it was the Lord, he put on his tunic (for he had stripped for work), jumped into the water, and headed to shore.  The others stayed with the boat and pulled the loaded net to the shore, for they were only about a hundred yards from shore.  When they got there, they found breakfast waiting for them—fish cooking over a charcoal fire, and some bread.      (John 21:3-9 NLT)

Did you catch that?

  • Gathering of dudes
  • Outdoors.
  • An open flame.
  • Animal protein consumption.
  • Add Jesus
  • Humble pie for dessert.

Humble pie?  Yep, served just after the “fresh catch” beast feast with a large slice commitment pie (read verses 10-19).   This is exactly what men do and exactly what men both love and need today: great food, great friends to share it with, and strong truth that challenges them to fulfill God’s purposes for their lives.

In a recent study by Men’s Health the top two ways men stay connected with friends are texting (#1) and “get-togethers” (#2).  That fact did not elude Jesus and it should direct us toward the already baked and natural channels of connecting men we want to reach for Christ.  The strong connection between the stomach and the soul for men is like a big fat blue dot softball floating into the strike zone.  Not to swing at this one simply makes no sense when there is a high probability you are going hit your way into some extra bases or perhaps a home run.

The good news is that the recipe for having a men’s small group meeting at your house looks no different than it did over two thousand years ago.  Tell the guys you’re having them over, light the grill up, serve some beverages, eat like you mean it, and feed the soul while you feed the body.
