Prayer

I urge you, first of all, that requests, prayers, intercessions and thanksgiving be made known to God. I Timothy 1:1-5

Prayer is one of the most difficult disciplines to develop as God’s man. Satan pulls out all the stops, engineers interruptions, rationalizations, and other diversions — anything to keep you from getting on your knees and connecting with the God of the universe.  Imagine Tiger Woods as your partner in a golf scramble, Warren Buffett as your financial backer for your business start-up or a team of navy SEALS with you on a mission.  All of these dudes possess some serious firepower, radically changing the odds of success and inspiration for your confidence. And while you may never experience these parings, the Bible says that Jesus has your back and is ready and willing to do war with you and for you — if you just ask.

Your decision to pray sends shivers through the world of evil because once again this is a language that is understood and feared deeply.  More to the point, Satan knows who’s going to show up on your behalf.  Satan will suggest, “You can do that later.”  But the Bible says, “Pray continually.” If you keep pounding the Enemy with heavy artillery, you’ll confuse and disperse him.  Not as a last resort but as your very first option, every day, 24/7.

The only thing I would add to that encouragement would be to stop moonlighting as morons and pray continually. Pray in the morning, on the drive to work, before your next sales call, before your meetings, while driving home, on the plane for the person next to you, and every other chance you get.

Father, thank you, the God of the universe, for assuring me of your availability in every situation.
