The World’s Isms
As it is, you do not belong to the world. (John 15:19)
Like the devil winds of Southern California, there’s a strong spiritual pressure system in the culture against God’s man. When Paul uses the word kosmos, he means “a system or organized way to think, lacking in God’s influence.” This high-pressure system of thinking and living is satanically inspired to separate people from God by powerful philosophies (or “isms”): tribalism, culturalism, secularism, humanism, relativism, intellectualism, hedonism, narcissism, materialism. These are some of the powerful manifestations of Satan’s influence in the world. All these isms place pressure on me to conform to their objects of worship and place beliefs or practices over God. These ways of the world have their origins in men but are inspired by the hater of men.
What we must realize is that the world’s systems of thinking and being are under Satan’s direction. These world systems are packaged and sold by Satan as popular opinions and prevailing cultural norms around the globe. This is how Satan hides. They’re all focused on keeping you centered on self and preventing you from turning to God.
Combining pressure systems creates devil winds in nature, and Satan uses the ways of the world to create a symbiotic, synergistic target in men’s hearts. He’s engineering the high-pressure system to seek out the low-pressure system of our flesh; our inherited predisposition to do evil. Even without Satan, this corrupted part of our character would go on sinning without encouragement. God’s man can unwittingly create the context for the perfect storm with a dry spirit, prayerlessness, negative emotions and secrets. God’s love for us will drive us to overcome these pressures.
Father, thank you for your trust in me.
