One Crafty Veteran
They are like a lion hungry for prey, like a fierce lion crouching in cover. Psalm 17:12
It seems almost every week I hear of another leader or fellow pastor in God’s army who has been shot down after what seemed to be an awesome beginning. For these men and others like them, their sin did not bring about their fall; it was their lack of discernment and understanding of their foe. Somewhere along the way they compartmentalized the evil – made the enemy an abstract theological construct – ignored God’s warnings – never saw the devil coming.
Early in their spiritual quest, they saw Satan as a huge threat. But now, with victory over major sins, some spiritual growth and success, and a little knowledge about God to flex in front of others the threat level was lowered to Green – low risk. Their sin did not bring about their fall; it was their lack of discernment and understanding of their foe.
Satan is legendary for his ability to take down the best of men who began their journey with Christ fully equipped with all the resources of God and the best of intentions. Get that. We have to see just how good he is at this in order to raise our respect and awareness to where it needs to be. While ownership of the spiritual resources for our dogfight with evil is guaranteed, that does not mean possession of, mastery over, or victory in our fight on earth. Zeal and equipment are not enough.
We must never let our guard down against a Crafty Veteran. He has brought down some of the best, at least in man’s view. We need never underestimate, take credit for, or take for granted the successes that God has given us. They are His workings within us. “Greater is He who is in you than he that is in the world.”
Father, let me never forget the work you are doing in me and the power YOU have over evil.
