What God’s Man is Not

My sons, do not forget my teaching, but keep my commands in your heart, for they will prolong your life many years and bring you peace and prosperity. Proverbs 3:1-2

It is not an all-or-nothing choice. On the one end its an abject, head-in-the-sand sheep, and at the other end is the ultimate warrior.  Few people exist completely on one end or the other.  Most of us live somewhere in between. The Bible presents a picture of God’s man as both dangerous and good, even as Jesus is presented as both in the Scriptures.  He is the Lion of the tribe of Judah and the Lamb of God.  The twist is that both identities are equally courageous and strong.  Yes, a courageous Lamb is willing to sacrifice itself and a confident King of kings riding hard and fast toward evil, sword drawn, with armies in tow.  My prayer is, “Lord, more of you and less of me please.”

Study God’s men throughout history and you’ll understand why it’s both necessary and practical to be engaged in the fight against evil. Look at Israel during the lives of two of its best fighters: Moses and Joshua.  Look at their activity and study their spiritual health, and you will quickly see a powerful fact shine forth: as the Israelites fight and battle for kingdom advance, they have no time or energy for sin.  Now study the times following this in the book of Judges, when they forgot their identity, laid down their swords prematurely, and blended in with the Canaanites.

Sure there are times of peace where we are called to enjoy the pasture, but also the battlefield requiring sacrifice. Know the value and the difference.

Father thank you for being in charge and present within me.
