Testing Our Loyalty
“I know, my God, that you test the heart and are pleased with integrity.” I Chronicles 29:17
A man must be proven by being put into situations that call for courage. Paul’s overriding point? We had some moments of severe testing and passed, baby! So when you look at and listen to us, remember that we are not in this thing to make an impression or take advantage of anybody. To make sure of that, God put us in the fire to test our commitment and motives, to see if we would live for an audience of one. God is on us every step of the way, testing our faithfulness.
Paul knew that men respect other men who are willing to be tested, and when tested, and come through it without compromising or selling out to circumstances, various pressures, or their feelings. A man must be proven by being put into situations that call for courage, or in Paul’s case, faithfulness to Christ under pressure.
This means He will have you consider two things in every moment of testing you will ever face. First, he will move you to remember your identity as a son of God and insist on faithfulness to your sonship. The Holy Spirit will say emphatically, “You are a Christian! You are a follower of Jesus. You are a child of the living God.” Second, He will ask you to sacrifice something you want in the moment for something of greater value connected to your faith — an action that requires faith! Most of the time, this involves sacrificing your claim to some feeling that would be produced for you through unfaithfulness to God.
Thank you Father, for giving me a chance to prove my love for you.
